Piero Lanza's Fattoria Poggerino is one of Chianti Classico's most prestigious estates. The land used to belong to Prince Ginori Conti, a descendant of one of Florence’s oldest families. Poggerino’s vineyards are located at 400 to 600 meters — pushing the boundaries where Sangiovese can ripen — allowing the estate to be uniquely equipped to excel in a warming climate. These parcels face south-southwest and are abundant with the rocky galestro soils for which Chianti is famous. The cooler temperatures, later flowering and extended hang times at these altitudes are vital for crafting elegant, refined Chianti Classico. Sourced from a single parcel of Piero's oldest vines, the Poggerino Vigna Bugialla Chianti Classico Riserva is a stunningly beautiful wine, showing off the finer side of Sangiovese and the pinnacle of the varietal's elegance. The nose is high-toned featuring dark red berry notes with just the right touch of earth, oak spice and mineral cut. The mid-palate is powerful, sexy and lush, brimming with vibrant, spiced fruit and teeming with wild-berry flavors. The finish is long with fine-grained tannins. This wine needs a big glass to fully unwind and showcase its full refinement and depth, offering a truly stunning drinking experience.
The 2022 Chianti Classico Riserva Bugialla is gorgeous. Black cherry, new leather, spice, menthol and licorice fill out the layers effortlessly. A wine of structure and palate presence, the 2022 deftly balances power and finesse. It’s a superb wine, especially for a year marked by intense drought. All the Poggerino signatures are front and center. The 2022 spent two years in cask.
