After studying Oenology at UC Davis and working in wineries around the world, James Jelks returned to Santa Cruz to make expressive wines with old world sensibility. Kind of Orange is made from Viognier sourced inland in the Cienega Valley. A gorgeous electric apricot color in the glass, aromas of peach gummy, mandarin and lychee dance from the glass. A chewy palate with notes of pink lemonade, balsamic pear, sweet and sour sauce, cold apple pie and a touch of brine lead to us to a dry yet very refreshing finish.
Known for its strong aromatics and thick, low-acid structure, Viognier isn’t exactly the darling of the natural wine world. But this oft-maligned variety gets a new look in this bottling from winemaker James Jelks. The 100 percent Viognier from California’s Central Coast is made with skin contact, tapping into the grape’s natural perfumed notes while adding some interesting texture on the palate. Juicy peaches, vanilla, honeysuckle, and grapefruit notes are complemented by hints of ginger and white pepper.
