Sometimes we come across wines that wow us, and this is one of them: one of the final vintages from Bela Fekete, aka ‘the grand old man of Somló.’ Somló is Hungary’s smallest appellation and was once an underwater volcano. Its slopes of ancient sea sediment, hardened lava, and basalt are home to some of Hungary’s steepest, most densely planted vineyards. This wine is opulent, salty, and honeyed — but very dry. There is a complex backbone of volcanic minerals matched with chamomile, orange peel, and essential oils. We will be reaching for this one all holiday season.
