Carcavelos is a rare gem. Made on the Atlantic coast, just west of Lisbon, this fortified wine fits somewhere between a Port and a Madeira. This 12-year-old blend is the calling card of the estate; it's made from Arinto, Gallego Dourado and Ratinho and then aged by the ocean, giving the finished wine the signature salty flavor of the Atlantic. The wine is aged exclusively in Portuguese ('Nacional') oak, and offers incredibly deep flavors of orange peel, salted caramel, buttered pecan, sandalwood and dried fruit on the long, beaming finish. Villa Oeiras is the only producer left that makes this classic wine that was beloved by Thomas Jefferson and Sir Walter Scott!
