Chardonnay lovers take note: the Styria region of Austria is a great contender for classy bottles. This wine, made from Morillon, a pseudonym for Chardonnay, offers a Chablis-like minerality and intensity, without the high price tags of Premier Cru Chablis. This has a taut, lemony palate that is flinty, with stone fruits, zest and texture. While light and slender, it still offers quite a bit of richness. Enjoy with schnitzel and a simple garden salad.
Robert Parker: 93 Points
Picked on October 7, whole-bunch pressed as gentle as a Crémant and vinified in large oak casks for eight months, this is a full-bodied yet pure, tight, enormously vital and tensioned Morillon (a.k.a. Chardonnay) that reveals drive and grip as well as youth. This is an impressive, probably lower-sulfur wine with great purity and a coolish, Styrian character. The finish is tight and grippy as well as salty and releases level grapefruit and lime notes at this early stage. Very unique in style and class.
