At their best, Rauenthal Rieslings – of which I know none finer nowadays than Breuer’s – nearly always possess a pronounced floral component and intriguing complexity. The present example is both heat-turning and head-scratching. Scents of rowan and iris mingle with lemon, lime ... and of all things, a whiff of coffee. The palate exhibits corresponding diversity, with a firmer feel and more overt sense of density and harder, stony mineral aspect than are delivered by the corresponding Rüdesheim Estate bottling. The finish is impressively persistent, invigoratingly tart-edged and possesses a peppery bite, while lacking the infectious juiciness or transparency of that corresponding Rüdesheimer. (Incidentally, where last year’s Rauenthal Estate bottling finished halbtrocken this 2016 harbors less than four grams residual sugar.)
