Here’s a superb introduction to the wonders of the Mencía grape as expressed on the steeply terraced slopes of the Ribeira Sacra, an area in far northern Spain that boasts a winemaking history dating back to Roman times. One of the region's superstars is Adega Algueira. The estate’s Mencia has aromas of pepper-tinged cherries and raspberries accented by dried herbs, star anise, and smoky schistose soil. Suave and palate-staining, the wine layers impressions of cherry, raspberry, and strawberry fruit underpinned by a persistent smoky soil undercurrent and brisk acidity. Fine tannins and suggestions of pomegranate, sassafras, and cinnamon emerge on the long, classy finish.
Deep red. Spice-accented red berries and cherry on the nose, along with a subtle floral nuance that builds with air. Juicy and focused on the palate, offering lively raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that fan out through the back half. Finishes silky and long, with lingering spiciness and discreet tannins that add gentle grip.
