Marcel Deiss Description

Warm but lively, elegant, precise with an astonishingly acidic frankness: still sedimentary mouthfeel, but with the precision of a scalpel. The acidity is major, broad, angular. The vitality is extraordinary, a form of silky accomplishment. Very great length on this particular floury sweetness, transcended by a dagger-like vivacity.

Vinous: 91 Points

Pale straw-green. Minerals, ginger and dried fruits on the bright nose. Juicy and off-dry, featuring vibrant flavors of pear, peach and sweet spices given grip by lemon and crushed stones. Quite tactile on the long back end; this tastes like it’s oaked, but it’s not. I find notes of honey and noble rot too, but Mathieu Deiss said there was no botrytis. According to him, the honeyed note is typical of the Schoffweg and contributes to this wine’s easy-to-drink nature. In an interesting generational battle, Mathieu’s father Jean-Michel told me he would have harvested these grapes a few days later to gather more concentration and ripeness, while Mathieu wanted to make brighter, fresher wine more in tune with today’s modern, hyper-busy lifestyle. There’s no way of knowing what might have been, but this is really pretty good.
